The Medical Benefits of Music
Music inspires and empowers people to be curious, creative, and adventurous with music, regardless of their skill base or background, raising aspirations and changing lives. Here is a rundown of the benefits of music.
1: MUSIC IS A STRESS RELIEF SYSTEM
Listening to your favorite music anytime you feel stressed and flagged out helps you relieve stress and this effect has been backed up by a series of research. According to a study carried out by the Medical News Today association (MNT), it was found that infants remained calmer for longer when they were played music rather than spoken to. Another study carried out also suggests that music helps to alleviate stress because of its effects on the pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature.
2. IT REDUCES PAIN AND ANXIETY
Medical News Today reported on a study led by Brunel University in the United Kingdom suggests that music may reduce pain and anxiety for patients who have undergone surgery. According to them, the effect was even stronger on patients who got to choose the music they listened to. The apparent reason why music has this amazing therapeutic effect is that listening to music triggers the release of opioids in the brain and opioids are the body’s natural pain relievers. A 2011 study from researchers at Mc Gill University in Canada found that listening to music increases the amount of dopamine produced in the brain!
3. MUSIC AIDS MEMORY
Regular listening to music has been found to increase memory benefits significantly. It can have long term cognitive, emotional, and social benefits in mild/moderate cases of dementia care and rehabilitation as reported by MNT again.
4. MUSIC HELPS IN RECOVERING FROM CASES OF BRAIN INJURY
A 2008 study conducted by researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland found that stroke patients who listened to music for around two hours daily had better verbal memory and attention and a more positive mood. This is without a doubt an incredible effect! Music had also been proven to aid speech recovery following cases of stroke. amazing!!!
With all of these numerous and outstanding medical benefits of music, it’s only right that musical therapy is incorporated into our health care system don’t you think? 🙂
